Vegans Are Sinners? »

Vegans Are Sinners?

April 6th, 2007 by NashVeggie Leave a reply »

A first has happened. I was at a client’s house working and when I was about to leave somehow the subject of food came up. I told the lady I was a vegan and she asked exactly what that meant. After quickly explaining how I eat or use nothing that has any type of animal product she exclaimed, “God gave Adam and Eve animals to eat!” I then told her in short order that I felt that didn’t apply to me, but not really in those terms. I think I actually said something along the line of, “That’s another issue you really wouldn’t want to get into with me.” Of course that got the question, “Where do you go to church?” (on a side note, why do people ASSUME everyone goes to church?) Telling her that I did not go to any church she then says, “Well, you seem to have good morals.”

Yes, I do have good morals, ethics as well. Since when does one have to eat meat and go to church to have either or both? Morals and ethics are no more than human psychology.

So here I am, a Vegan non-church goer…the ultimate sinner!

I have a good feeling she won’t be calling me to do anymore work for her.

    Actually there is a verse in Genesis 1 where God says that he gives Adam and Eve vegetables as meat. Back in that day meat meant food and flesh referred to meat. Does that make since? Well anyway I know that you don’t believe in that, but tell that lady that’s what I said.

    Tell your client that she needs to read her Bible. According to the Bible, God originally gave humans and animals only plants to eat. The eating of animals by both plants and humans was a later concession after our relationship with God had been broken and post flood. The language of the post-reconciliation with God kingdom speaks of a time when all humans and animals will coexist peacefully again and both animals and humans will return to vegetarianism. The Bible passages are below.

    gen. 1:29-30*before the fall*
    God said, ‘See, I have given you every plant yielding seed that is upon the face of all the earth, and every tree with seed in its fruit; you shall have them for food. And to every beast of the earth, and to every bird of the air, and to everything that creeps on the earth, everything that has the breath of life, I have given every green plant for food.’ And it was so.

    gen. 9:2-5*after the fall*
    The fear and dread of you shall rest on every animal of the earth, and on every bird of the air, on everything that creeps on the ground, and on all the fish of the sea; into your hand they are delivered. Every moving thing that lives shall be food for you; and just as I gave you the green plants, I give you everything. Only, you shall not eat flesh with its life, that is, its blood. For your own lifeblood I will surely require a reckoning: from every animal I will require it and from human beings, each one for the blood of another, I will require a reckoning for human life.

    Isaiah 11:6–9*Prophesy of future reconciliation time*
    The wolf shall live with the lamb,
    the leopard shall lie down with the kid,
    the calf and the lion and the fatling together,
    and a little child shall lead them.
    The cow and the bear shall graze,
    their young shall lie down together;
    and the lion shall eat straw like the ox.
    The nursing child shall play over the hole of the asp,
    and the weaned child shall put its hand on the adder’s den.
    They will not hurt or destroy
    on all my holy mountain;
    for the earth will be full of the knowledge of the Lord
    as the waters cover the sea.

    If I were to ever hear from her again and be asked to visit for work I doubt I would bring the subject up, it wouldn’t be right I don’t think. I would, however, expect her to and I would quote the verses, I already knew of them but on that particular occasion I had no desire to divulge my personal life with this lady anymore than I already had as I try not to mix my personal and professional lives. She has not called me yet, and as I stated I don’t expect her to.

    Wow, well….I’m a Christian and I don’t think that way. The original diet in the Bible is vegan. After the flood God gave us permission to eat animals. This is wayyyyy before the industrialization of animals for meat. I don’t believe eating meat is wrong but I do believe that the commercial industrialization of animals for meat is wrong and I believe that God would say the same thing. What we are doing now is not even close to being caring, nuturing or civil. Because of this I strive everyday to become closer to being a vegan. I am right now an 80% vegan.
